Radcliffe Baffled by Failure

Simon Coggeshall, London 23rd August 2004

Britain's Paula Radcliffe has broken Mary Decker's twenty year old record in the women's dropping out of an event for which you are favourite, and starting to cry. This event had traditionally been dominated by Americans, but Radcliffe, who is the best woman runner in the World, has surprised the Americans by taking the gold. However, it is thought that the Americans are set to appeal and Radcliffe could be disqualified on the grounds that there was nothing actually wrong with her after all. Surely the question on everybody's lips now will be whether or not Radcliffe decides to run the first ninety-percent of the 10,000 metres.

British althletes have a proud history of winning medals for the more unusual track and field events. Who can forget Linford Christie's gold winning performance in the First one to three false starts is disqualified race in 1998?

This year's games have seen a more than respectable haul of medals for Team GB, as they have decided to call themselves. However, most of these medals come from traditionally upper crust sports, such as Horsey things, rowing, punting in stripey blazer and straw boater, shooting peasants, Pimms Drinking and croquet.
