Blair plays terror card as expected

Andrew Marbles, London November 23rd, 2004

Blunkett revealed in his ITN News interview tonight, the clearest glimpse yet of his party's political intentions, when he insisted that New Labour's priority was all about homeland security, using the word "our" which he obviously and carelessly thought he was using in way that would make us think he was referring to the population of the UK, but it was very clear that this "our" actually meant Blair's inner circle.

I can't believe he's still trying to bring in his unwanted and intrusive ID card scheme. How the fucking hell is this going to help stop terrorism? The government get all our details, including DNA information, I could still be a suicide bomber - I'm not going to think "Oh no, I might get found out, because I might leave my ID card behind". Meanwhile, I won't be able to vote against an incumbent government or one of their policies without their knowledge. I won't be able to take part in peaceful protests should a government try to do something with which a large proportion of people disagree. It's all very well saying that this Government would never use this information for these sort of purposes, well firstly I'm not so sure, and secondly that's really not the point is it? Once this sort of thing is introduced, the danger is there, never to be reversed, and the serious abuse of such power could come from the next Government, the one after that or one in twenty or even a hundred years time. It's a road we shouldn't go down and if you don't think it's dangerous, then I urge you to actually think about what this really means.

Blunkett is a man who has spent his time in office, systematically trying to dismantle the judiciary, turning this country by turns ever closer into a Police State. The checks and balances are gradually being eroded, and anyone who disagrees with Blair's government is targetted. You can no longer get Legal Aid for certain things, mainly those which challenge the Government including immigration issues and hidden among the latest proposals is one that means you will no longer be able to obtain Legal Aid for actions against the Police, say for example if they arrested you without evidence and beat you senseless. If you're not worried now, you might well find that you will be in ten, or maybe twenty years time.

The worst thing that Al Qaeda's influence may yet bring might not be a destructive and cowardly bombing, but that this nevertheless real threat is overhyped and used as a political tool to allow the insane, power crazed Blunkett and Blair to take away our rights, changing the law in the process so they can never be voted out.
