Jackson Jury spend day perusing grumble

Robert Binge, London 24th March, 2005

I hate to disappoint you all, but I am not going to talk about the porn. Any jokes I can make, will be nicked by the editor and put into his front page summary blurb.

What are we supposed to think about this trial? On the one hand there's no doubt that Jackson is a weirdo. On the other hand, you've got the fat policeman who's made it his life's mission to nail Jackson, regardless of such trifling matters as having evidence or actual guilt. Then you've got the mental family of the alleged molestee, people to whom terms such as "reliable witness" and "credible" seem a million miles away.

The trial seems to be being conducted as a great big circus, as the freak is paraded for the audience. See how he falls ill, on the point of collapse! Meanwhile, the judge and jury and all the lawyers are having a whale of a time. Free tours round his house, rides on his fun fair, helping themselves to his booze and ogling his nudie mags.

Jackson has lost touch with reality, as anybody watching Martin "The Slug" Bashir's documentary could see from the way he went shopping, spending 3 million dollars on the most hideous tat. However, America did this to him, made him what he is, indulged and encouraged him, even worshipped him for it. He is the extreme embodiment of America's opulent and vapid indulgence in plastic surgery, superficial vanity, material goods and Disneyland-style fantasy.

America woke up one day and saw his freakish face, looking back at them, the hideous refection of what they had become and they were shocked, appalled and most of all, angry. The natural reaction to this is to light torches and form a lynch mob to attack and destroy the monster. This is like all the classic horror/witch burning cases in which one figure is unlucky enough to become the scapegoat for all ills, when in reality everybody is in some way responsible.

If redemption is what they seek, however, they're not going to get it because the very way the trial is being reported clearly demonstrates what a totally mental, fucked up country it is.

In the end though, I can't see how this can turn out for the best. The way the whole thing is being conducted just fucks it up so much, that the entire trial is pointless and there's no chance of a proper verdict ever being reached. If Jackson is guilty, he will probably get away with it. Even if he doesn't, his victims are going to have serious psychological fall-out from all of this. On the other hand, if he's innocent, then he can never really be compensated for what he's had to go through and his accusers, despite having commited a despicable act, will continue to make a living out of it.
